My Recent Work
Blog Post: A Night of Sparkle – Capturing the Human Disco Ball Party
As a photographer, every event tells a unique story, and the recent party I shot was no exception. Set in a cosy venue with tight spaces, the atmosphere was electric, awash with colourful lighting that danced across the walls and guests. From the moment I stepped in, I couldn’t help but think of the cinematic energy of Run Lola Run – bold, dynamic, and bursting with life.
The theme for the night, “Human Disco Ball,” set the tone for an evening full of shimmering outfits, laughter, and movement. Working in a confined space can be challenging, but it also provided the perfect opportunity to embrace the creative chaos. I leaned into the vibrancy of the lighting, letting it infuse the shots with an otherworldly energy that mirrored the mood of the party.
A New Editing Workflow
For this project, I decided to experiment with my editing workflow, incorporating an AI de-noise tool for the first time. It was a bit of a learning curve and admittedly a lengthy process, but the results were well worth the effort. The tool helped refine the images, preserving the vivid colours and crisp details of the event while reducing noise in low-light shots.
The final photos captured the spontaneity and sparkle of the evening beautifully. I was thrilled with how they turned out, and more importantly, so was the client!
Client Review
Here’s what the client had to say about the photos:
"Tom took pictures of a special birthday party of mine (theme: Human Disco Ball). He beautifully captured the sparkle of the evening but at the same time you can feel his film background in the pictures. His instinct for unstaged interaction between the guests makes them quite different from your average party selfie (which you can take yourself 🙂). Every time I look at them I discover something new; great stuff!"
Reflecting on the Experience
What made this party so memorable was the blend of movement, light, and genuine connection between the guests. As a photographer, I aim to go beyond simple documentation and capture the essence of an event – the fleeting glances, bursts of laughter, and moments of stillness amidst the chaos.
This shoot reminded me why I love what I do. Tight spaces and challenging lighting might seem like limitations, but they often spark the most creative results. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to capture such a unique evening and to have my work so warmly received.
If you’re planning a party or event and want more than just the usual snapshots, I’d love to help you tell your story. Let’s create something that sparkles.
Cheers,
Tom
